Our CurriculumHow We Boost Your Child’s Confidence in Reading

Through MindChamps Reading, we help your child to master the eight essential skills that will provide a solid foundation in reading and nurture him/her into a skilled reader for life.

An Interactive Way of Learning How to Read

Our integrated phonics approach teaches your child to form word sounds by blending phonemes (i.e. the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (i.e. a way of writing phonemes). As your child learns to better understand the text he/she reads and writes, he/she will become better able to express thoughts, ideas and emotions when communicating with others.

One of the key highlights of MindChamps Reading is our Read-Along mobile app, which features a comprehensive collection of e-books and interactive activities.

Written by Brian Caswell, Dean of Research & Programme Development at MindChamps, each story in the e-book collection comes with a catchy song, an interactive reading and listening experience and a set of activities that help to strengthen your child’s phonological and phonemic awareness.

Apart from being used by our trainers for in-class lessons, the Read-Along app is also available for you to download on your mobile phone to help your child revise and practise his/her reading skills at home.

The Read-Along app is available for download on both Google Play and the App Store. Your child’s trainer will provide you with the sign-in details at the start of the programme.

Based on the results of the literacy assessment your child takes prior to enrolment, he/she will start our reading programme at the level that best matches his/her current needs.

Raising an Avid Reader and Confident Learner

Reading is an essential skill for smooth communication, effective learning and everyday situations.

While we tend to focus on teaching children how to read in their preschool years, it is equally important to ensure that they can read with understanding. This means helping your child not only sound out words, but also comprehend the meaning of words or sentences and relating them to their own life.

MindChamps Reading was designed with precisely this goal in mind.

Hitting Key Milestones with a Structured Programme

There is no hard and fast rule for how quickly a child’s reading abilities should be developing. You may be concerned, however, if your child appears to be lagging behind their peers of the same age. Regardless of their current aptitude, MindChamps Reading will help your child master essential skills to read with confidence and joy.

Instead of traditional rote learning, our reading enrichment programme focuses on developing children’s 3 Minds (the Champion, Learning and Creative minds) to make them a more effective learner. This includes:

8 Critical Aspects to Nurturing Readers for Life

Reading is a process involving a set of skills – with proficiency in English phonics being just one. In our reading enrichment lessons, your child will participate in activities that will develop the following skills that will help them become a skilled and confident reader over time.
1. Engagement

To enjoy reading, children must be actively engaged in the process, for this will help them read aloud with rich expression. Once your child develops a love of reading, they will be able to tackle writing with ease.

2. Active Understanding

During the class, your child will go through the four important areas of the English language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The more your child understands how these areas work, the more they will be able to analyse written text and think about the meaning behind sentences. These are important skills that will benefit your child throughout the school years.

3. Narrative Intelligence and Higher-Order Thinking Skills

Narrative intelligence is the ability to generate innovative answers through sequential understanding and unique ways of asking the right questions. Our reading programme builds this skill in your child through immersive reading and theatrical strategies, which will then develop their higher-order thinking skills as they learn to ‘interact’ with written content and knowledge.

4. Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to ‘hear’ and manipulate the individual sounds of a language. For your child to improve their reading ability, they need to learn how to hear these sounds in meaningful contexts.

Through exposure to reading activities, your child will become aware of words as individual units and develop a sense of the sounds of words as they write.

5. Phonics

In our reading programme, we use our unique “Say & Sing Phonics” method to help your child master the connection between symbols and sounds (phonics) by learning and experiencing their correlation in a meaningful context.

6. Fluency

As an early reader, it is important for your child to learn and understand the natural flow and rhythm of the language. Through engaging experiences with rhyme, rhythm, repetition and songs, your child will become familiar with the language and achieve language fluency.

7. Vocabulary-Building

Knowing and understanding a huge collection of words goes a long way towards building a skilled reader in your child. With an extensive collection of e-books in MindChamps’ Read-Along app, your child will grow their vocabulary through stories, rhymes and alliteration, making vocabulary-building an easy and fun process.

8. Structural Awareness

Structural awareness will help your child to recognise how words in a sentence fit together. Through the sharing of conversations, stories, poems, songs and ideas verbally, your child will discover how language is constructed and be able to relate new words and phrases back to what they have read before.

At MindChamps Singapore, we are dedicated to empower your child and them to achieve their full potential. Should you have any enquiries, do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Natural Literacy for N1

This is a pre-literacy programme that introduces your child to reading through play, sensory-based learning, craft work and interactive storytelling. It is an extension of the reading curriculum currently taught in MindChamps PreSchools at the PG and N1 levels.

Apart from exposing your child to the magic of stories through role-playing and puppetry, a typical lesson will also feature craft work to build fine motor skills, games to get your child moving and some introductory phonics-based activities. The programme includes a workbook with weekly letters to inform you of what has been done in class, as well as activities that you can participate in with your child at home.

At the end of Term 4, your child will take a standard reading test to determine what level he/she progresses to in the following year.

With this programme, your child will be able to:

Learn in a language-rich environment that builds interest in the spoken and written word
Develop fine motor skills which are essential to begin the literacy journey
Gain confidence and develop creativity
Be introduced to basic numeracy concepts (learning how to count)
Build an awareness of the alphabet from A to Z
Enjoy books and build good reading habits

Levels 1-4 (Joey) for N2

This programme is focused on giving your child the best foundation for reading. This is achieved through exposure to the four key essentials of language development – reading, pre-writing, speaking and listening.

Trainers will read curated books together with your child and use simple questions to encourage him/her to think more deeply about the story and its characters. Multisensory activities are also used to develop your child’s phonemic awareness as he/she identifies individual sounds in spoken words, as well as to inject fun and creativity into each class.

Your child will also be introduced to pre-writing activities such as pattern-making and the preformation of letters.

With this programme, your child will be able to:

Recognise letters and sounds of the alphabets
Expand the use of spoken vocabulary
Tell and retell stories confidently
Write his/her own name and common 3- and 4-letter words
Understand the basics of print, such as capital letters and punctuation

Trainers will also demonstrate correct reading behaviours and guide your child closely to expand his/her vocabulary, strengthen his/her phonics foundation and explore new types and styles of text.

With this programme, your child will be able to:

Use extensive spoken vocabulary
Write about personal experiences using correct grammar and punctuation marks
Identify digraphs (a combination of two letters representing one sound, as in ph)
